“Adiuva Me” is an ancient song, and the words are from two languages. Here are the lyrics:
Adiuva Me
Deus meus adiuva me
Tabhair dom do shearc, a Mhic dhil De.
Tabhair dom do shearc, a Mhic dhil De.
Deus meus adiuva me.
Domine, da quod peto a te,
Tabhair dom go dian, a ghrian ghlan ghle.
Tabhair dom go dian, a ghrian ghlan ghle.
Domine, da quod peto a te.
Tuum a-morem s-icut vis.
Tabhair dom go trean a dearfad a-ris.
Tabhair dom go trean a dearfad a-ris.
Tuum a-morem s-icut vis.
Domine, Domine, exaudi me.
Manam bheith lan de d ghra Dhe.
Manam bheith lan de d ghra Dhe.
Domine, Domine, exaudi me.
“Adiuva Me” (Come to Me) is a traditional Irish hymn taken from ancient monastic manuscripts, dating from around 1086 A.D. It is written in a style that was popular in Western Europe during the Mediaeval period, called “macaronics”.
Macaronics are poems composed in alternating lines and phrases using two different languages, one of them usually Latin. In this case the second is Old or Middle Irish Gaelic.
Though the author is unknown it is commonly attributed to the Irish cleric Maol Iosa O Brolchain, a renowned Irish poet during the 11th century. His name, sometimes spelled Mael Isu, means “follower of Jesus” in Gaelic.
English Translation:
Latin: My God come to me.
Gaelic: Help me, darling Son of God.
(repeat)
Latin: Lord, give me what I ask of you.
Gaelic: Bring it quickly, O bright clean Sun.
(repeat)
Latin: Your love is like a force.
Gaelic: Give it to me powerfully, again what I ask.
(repeat)
Latin: Lord, Lord, hear me.
Gaelic: My soul will be full of the love of God.
(repeat)
This song was performed by The Boatrights, and I will always be their fan.
