    A 2004 Hyundai Elantra was crash tested on May 24, 2004 into a fixed deformable barrier at
    40.0 mi/h (64.4 km/h) and a 40 percent overlap on the driver side. A Hybrid III 50th percentile
    male dummy was positioned in the driver seat with the lap/shoulder belt fastened.

    All 2004 and later Elantra models have redesigned driver frontal airbags and all 2004 and later Elantras manufactured after August 2003 also include redesigned passenger frontal airbags. (Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on the driver door or adjacent B-pillar.) At the request of Hyundai, the Institute agreed to test the 2004 Elantra with the redesigned airbag system.

    The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of the 2004 Elantra with the redesigned driver and passenger airbags in three 40 mph moderate overlap frontal crash tests into deformable barriers. A fuel leak occurred in the first test. Hyundai identified a fuel hose clamp that was improperly positioned, which led to puncturing of the fuel tank during the crash. Hyundai has recalled the affected models to reposition the hose clamp. A second test was conducted to assess the effect of the fix.

    In the second test, no fuel leakage occurred, but the driver frontal airbag failed to deploy. This led Hyundai to modify the frontal airbag deployment characteristics beginning with 2005 models produced after December, 2004. Also, Hyundai initiated a recall to modify at its cost 2004-05 models produced earlier. The Institute tested a third Elantra with the modified airbags, and the driver airbag inflated properly.

    The evaluation of the Elantra below is based on the first and third tests, except for the structural rating, which is based on all three tests.

    Measures of intrusion taken after the crash indicated the lower instrument panel in front of the
    dummy moved rearward 5 cm. Resultant intrusion in the driver footwell measured 10 cm at the
    footrest and 11-14 cm at other places on the toepan. All doors remained closed during the crash.
    After the crash, the driver door required additional effort but no tools to open. All other doors
    opened with ease.

    The driver dummy was restrained by a three-point lap/shoulder belt only; the driver front airbag
    did not deploy. During the crash, the belt crash tensioner activated and retracted 6 cm of
    shoulder belt webbing. A net amount of 26 cm of webbing (or a total of 32 cm including the
    tensioner-retracted length) spooled off the retractor, including about 20 cm from the forcelimiting
    mechanism. The dummy’s head moved forward and struck the steering wheel rim.
    During rebound, the rear of the head contacted the B-pillar. After the crash, the upper end of the
    steering column had moved downward 3 cm and rearward 4 cm.

    The maximum resultant head accelerations were 107 g from the steering wheel rim contact and
    35 g from the B-pillar contact. The maximum right lower tibia L-M moment was 183 Nm, and
    the maximum right lower tibia A-P moment was –180 Nm, significantly contributing to the right
    lower tibia index of 0.95. The maximum right tibia axial force was –4.6 kN. The maximum
    right tibia-femur displacement was –17 mm. The maximum right femur force was –7.8 kN at 94
    ms and remained above –6.9 kN for more than 3 ms. The maximum right foot resultant
    acceleration was 359 g.
