    Plant resistance to drought depends on timely stomatal closure

    Stomata play a significant role in the Earth’s water and carbon cycles, by regulating gaseous exchanges between the plant and the atmosphere. Under drought conditions, stomatal control of transpiration has long been thought to be closely coordinated with the decrease in hydraulic capacity (hydraulic failure due to xylem embolism). We tested this hypothesis, by coupling a meta-analysis of functional traits related to the stomatal response to drought and embolism resistance with simulations from a soil-plant hydraulic model. We report here a previously unreported phenomenon: the existence of an absolute limit by which stomata closure must occur to avoid rapid death in drought conditions. The water potential causing stomatal closure and the xylem pressure at the onset of embolism formation were equal for only a small number of species, and the difference between these two traits (i.e. safety margins) increased continuously with increasing embolism resistance. Our findings demonstrate the need to revise current views about the functional coordination between stomata and lead to a mechanistic framework allowing to model plant mortality under drought conditions with leaf and hydraulic traits.

    La résistance des plantes à la sécheresse nécessite une fermeture stomatique précoce.

    Les stomates jouent un rôle important dans les cycles de l’eau et du carbone à l’échelle du globe, en régulant les échanges gazeux entre la plante et l’atmosphère. En conditions de sécheresse, le contrôle stomatique de la transpiration est considéré comme étant étroitement lié à la perte de conductance hydraulique due à de l’embolie vasculaire. Nous avons testé ce paradigme grâce d’une part à une méta-analyse regroupant des traits fonctionnels stomatique et hydraulique, et d’autre part à un modèle hydraulique sol-plante permettant de simuler la mortalité des plantes en conditions de sécheresse. Nos résultats mettent en évidence une limite absolue à partir de laquelle la fermeture des stomates est nécessaire pour éviter une mort rapide de la plante lorsque la sécheresse s’intensifie. Le potentiel hydrique provoquant une fermeture complète des stomates est égal à la pression xylèmienne induisant un début d’embolie gazeuse pour seulement un petit nombre d’espèces alors que la majorité d’entre elles, notamment les plus résistantes à l’embolie, ferment leurs stomates très en amont d’un potentiel dysfonctionnement hydraulique.

    Nos résultats montrent la nécessité de réviser la théorie scientifique actuelle qui repose sur une coordination étroite entre la fermeture des stomates et le début de l’embolie chez les plantes. Ils permettront à terme de modéliser plus finement la mortalité des plantes dans des conditions de sécheresse et donc de mieux prédire les impacts des évènements extrêmes sur les écosystèmes (cycle de l’eau et du carbone) et les communautés végétales (biodiversité), modèles indispensables aux analyses, expertises et décisions publiques au centre des enjeux liés au réchauffement climatique.
